San Antonio Animal Care Services is waiving adoption fees through Sunday, July 26, as the city’s municipal animal shelter faces overcrowding following a surge in pets brought in after recent severe weather.
The shelter’s kennels are currently housing more than 550 animals, leaving the facility over capacity. Shelter officials said the increase is due to the combination of the busy summer intake season, weather-related calls from last week and recent animal welfare enforcement actions.
To create space for the continued influx of animals arriving each day, Animal Care Services is urging residents to adopt or foster a shelter pet.
Adoption fees have been reduced to $0 through Sunday. Every adopted pet will go home spayed or neutered, vaccinated and equipped with a registered microchip at no cost to adopters.
“We do not have kennel space for more than a couple hundred pets and friendly tested pets can be co-housed but it does not create the type of kennel space we need given all the pets we have in our kennels now,” an ACS spokesperson said. “Adoptions rescues and fosters are the real solutions.”
Animal Care Services said they will provide foster families with all necessary supplies and veterinary care.
San Antonio Animal Care Services is located at 4710 State Highway 151.
