LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – A man is dead and another is jailed on a murder charge following a shooting in northeast Lubbock early Saturday. Investigators say a large crowd then gathered, making it difficult to work the scene.
The Lubbock Police Department was called to a home on East Auburn Street, near Parkway Drive inside of Northeast Loop 289, at 1:59 a.m. Responding officers found Stephon Jones, 37, with a gunshot wound. Jones died at the scene.
According to an LPD news release, while police were on-scene, a large crowd began to gather, “creating difficulties in officers’ ability to secure and process the scene”.
The department reports the growing presence and unruliness of the crowd prompted a callout and response by LPD’s Special Response Group. This additional callout allowed officers and forensic investigators to fully process and investigate the scene.
According to LPD, the initial investigation shows Jones and someone else arrived outside the home of Robert Kinney, 65. There was a verbal then physical altercation between Kinney and Jones. Police say Kinney then shot Jones.
Kinney has been arrested on a murder charge. He is held in the Lubbock County Detention Center on a $250,000 bond.
The Lubbock Metro Special Crimes Unit is now handling the investigation.
