Summer is prime time for Texans to hit the roads and explore in and beyond the Lone Star State. But for those long-range commuters: What options are there for overnight stays in your vehicles?
Among a whole host of travel centers along Texas highways is Pilot Flying J, a truck stop and travel center chain boasting more than 100 locations across the Lone Star State. Here’s a closer look at the do’s and don’ts behind overnight stays for drivers, truckers and RVers.
Pilot Flying J does allow for overnight parking for both semi-trucks and RVs, according to the business’ services page. Per the company, there are designated overnight spaces available for a “safe travel break.” The travel centers also include RV-specific fueling lanes, dump stations and propane refill stations, as well as the option to reserve showers for a travel refresh.
As for general vehicle parking, MySA reached out to Pilot Flying J for further details on their overnight policy. In an email, a company spokesperson said that while extended parking and overnight accommodations are available for professional drivers, those same parking options aren’t offered to general passengers.
“At Pilot, our top priority is providing a safe, clean and welcoming environment for all travelers on the road. While we offer extended parking for our professional drivers, our passenger parking areas are intended for short-term rest and enjoying the amenities of our travel centers, allowing guests to recharge before continuing their journey,” the spokesperson noted.
Yes, Pilot Flying J specifically states that overnight RV parking is available in specific spaces “for a safe travel break,” with extended parking also offered toward commercial truckers.
In general, it isn’t illegal to sleep in your vehicle in Texas, as there isn’t a statewide law specific to the matter. However, some local regulations can limit what is and isn’t allowed, with many municipalities having rules prohibiting stays in residential areas or public spaces.
Texas is home to 118 Pilot Flying J locations statewide. In the greater Austin area, there are three Pilot Flying Js, with one in south of the Texas capital in Buda and two in Jarrell.
Outside of the Austin metro, San Antonio is home to three sites within city limits, alongside three in Dallas and three others in Fort Worth. Beyond the Lone Star State, there are more than 900 locations situated across 43 states, per company details.
