CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (KFDA) – The Amarillo Sod Poodles fell to the Corpus Christi Hooks 2-0 Saturday night at Whataburger Field, suffering a shutout loss for the second consecutive game.
Hooks score twice against Eagen
Corpus Christi scored in the second inning when Walker Janek hit a solo home run to center field. The Hooks added a run in the third when Yamal Encarnacion drew an eight-pitch walk, stole second and scored on a Trevor Austin RBI single to make it 2-0.
Sod Poodles starter Daniel Eagen struck out nine batters and finished with 10 total strikeouts over five innings, but allowed both Corpus Christi runs.
Mayer shuts down Amarillo
Hooks starter Bryce Mayer matched Eagen’s performance, holding Amarillo to three hits and one walk while striking out nine. The Sod Poodles went 1-for-3 with runners in scoring position.
Angel Ortiz doubled off the center field wall in the fourth for Amarillo’s first hit of the night but could not advance. Junior Franco stole third with two outs in the sixth before Mayer ended his outing with his ninth strikeout.
Corpus Christi’s bullpen closed out the final nine outs. In the ninth, Cristofer Torin drew a two-out walk to bring the tying run to the plate, but Angel Ortiz flew out to center field to end the game.
Amarillo will start southpaw Avery Short in Sunday’s series finale, looking to earn a series split before leaving Corpus Christi.
