EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — State Rep. Vince Perez, D-Texas, is bringing the Texas Legislative Progressive Caucus (TLPC) to El Paso and will host one of its People’s Hearing events here.

The event will be held at 6 p.m. Monday, July 27 at the El Paso Community Foundation, The Foundation Room, 333 N. Oregon Street, 1st Floor.

This is the second People’s Hearing held by the Progressive Caucus. The first was held in Houston last week.

This summer, members of the TLPC are taking the Legislature out of the Capitol and into communities across Texas. Unlike the invitation-only interim hearings held on the Capitol’s schedule, the People’s Hearings are open to the public, held in the evenings and in community venues, Perez’s office said.

Any Texan can show up and be heard. Testimony gathered this summer will shape the Caucus’ agenda for the session that convenes in January 2027.

The El Paso hearing will highlight two topics through invited testimony from local community leaders: immigration detention, including the existing facility at Camp East Montana and the proposed facility in Socorro, and public education funding.

Perez will be joined by fellow members of the Texas House and the Caucus. These incude Rep. Ana-María Rodríguez Ramos, D-Dallas and chair of the TLPC, Rep. Christina Morales, D-Houston, and Rep. John Bryant, D-Dallas. They will be joined by County and local leaders from across the El Paso region.

“After more than 30 years of Republican leadership in Austin, El Paso keeps getting the same answer: less for our kids, more federal hardware in our backyard,” Perez said. “That is a choice, and the same communities keep paying for it. We are not waiting for an invitation to the Capitol. We are putting El Paso’s testimony on the record here, at home, and carrying it to Austin ourselves.”

Members of the community are invited to offer testimony and public comment on any issue they would like to bring before the Caucus, from health care to infrastructure, data centers to the cost of living, Perez’s office said.

Community testimony will be taken in panels, with speakers taking questions directly from the dais, in the format of a legislative committee hearing.
