The Texas Game Wardens are investigating a deadly boat crash that killed a 16-year-old on Saturday, July 25, in Kleberg County near the Bird Island Basin boat ramp.
According to Texas Game Wardens, officers from Nueces and Kleberg counties responded around 6:15 a.m. to a collision involving two boats at the Bird Island Basin boat ramp on the Laguna Madre. Investigators said a jon boat carrying three occupants collided with a center console boat. During the crash, a 16-year-old boy was ejected from the jon boat. He did not survive.
The Texas Game Warden Boat Accident Reconstruction Team is leading the investigation into what caused the collision. Officials said the case remains active and that no additional details, including the identities of those involved or what may have led to the crash, are being released at this time.
Texas Game Wardens extended their condolences to the teenager’s family.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the young man’s family during this difficult time,” the agency said in a statement.
Several agencies assisted with the response, including the Kleberg County Sheriff’s Office, Padre Island National Seashore Rangers, the Corpus Christi Police Department, the Corpus Christi Fire Department and U.S. Border Patrol.
Officials have not said when they expect to release additional information as the investigation continues.
The Laguna Madre in Kleberg County is located along the eastern edge of the county, tucked between the Texas mainland and Padre Island.
