The victim was found shot dead in his kitchen apartment in December 2021, police say.

ARLINGTON, Texas — Arlington police have charged a suspect with capital murder in connection with the shooting death of a man in 2021.

Police charged 39-year-old Jason Reyes with the murder of Alphonso Lewis Jr., who officials say was found shot dead in December 2021 inside his southwest Arlington apartment.

Officers were first called to the shooting at about 4:59 p.m. Dec. 10, 2021, to an apartment complex in the 6300 block of Rivertrail Circle. Upon reaching the apartment, police say they found Lewis unresponsive on the kitchen floor with a gunshot wound to his dead. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say that, based on video evidence found inside the apartment, Lewis and the suspect appeared to be engaging in high-risk drug activity when the shooting occurred.

Surveillance footage was recovered showing a masked person wearing gloves leaving the complex shortly after the shooting was believed to have taken place, officials say. The department shared a photo of this person with the public in 2022, and later, police say they got a tip that the person looked like Reyes.

Police say detectives later learned Lewis had sold drugs to Reyes in the past. Further, cell phone records reportedly showed Reyes’ phone had pinged near the crime scene just before the shooting. nd after the shooting, both Reyes’ and Lewis’ phones reportedly pinged in the same locations across Arlington.

Police obtained an arrest warrant after consulting the Tarrant County District Attorney’s Office. Reyes is currently held at the Tarrant County Jail.Â
