KERRVILLE, Texas — Over a week since the major flooding devastated Central Texas, residents are continuing to rebuild small steps at a time, but it’s a long process that is both physically and emotionally grueling.
Even though she’s out of the water now, Kerrville resident Alma Maldonado still feels like she’s drowning. She recounts how she woke up the morning of July 16 to splashing water in her home that swept her outside against her wire fence. Volunteers are helping Maldonado sort through the pieces of her life that are scattered outside her home. She explains that even though every house looks like a mess, she is still attached to what is in this mess.
Early assessments report nearly 500 homes were damaged in last week’s storms. On Friday, Gov. Greg Abbott talked about the long road ahead.
“The work is beginning with regard to fixing this region and get it rebuilt and put back together,” Abbott said.
Maldonado explains any helping hands are welcome, but the heavy lifting comes from the patience and understanding she has received as she parts with the home she’s known for the last 26 years. She says she is grateful for the support from volunteers as she processes what comes next.
