Corpus Christi is giving away free mosquito prevention kits through Thursday at rotating senior centers. Supplies are limited to one kit per household.
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Corpus Christi-Nueces County Public Health District is helping residents protect themselves from mosquitoes by hosting a series of community awareness events across the city this week.
From Monday, July 27, through Thursday, July 30, the Health District will distribute free mosquito prevention kits at two senior centers each day. Events will run from 10 a.m. to noon, and residents are asked to come inside to pick up their supplies, as no drive-thru option will be available.

Each kit includes mosquito dunks to help eliminate mosquito larvae in standing water, insect repellent, family-friendly educational materials and emergency preparedness information. Supplies are limited to one kit per household and will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.
The giveaway comes as South Texas enters one of the busiest times of the year for mosquitoes. Recent rainfall and warm temperatures create ideal breeding conditions, increasing the importance of eliminating standing water and taking steps to prevent mosquito bites.
Health officials encourage residents to dump standing water from flowerpots, buckets, bird baths, tires and other containers around their homes where mosquitoes can lay eggs. Using insect repellent, wearing protective clothing outdoors and keeping doors and windows properly screened can also help reduce exposure.
The mosquito awareness events will rotate among Corpus Christi senior centers throughout the week:
Monday: Broadmoor Senior Center and Ethel Eyerly Senior CenterTuesday: Garden Senior Center and Northwest Senior CenterWednesday: Lindale Senior Center and Greenwood Senior CenterThursday: Oveal Williams Senior Center and Zavala Senior Center
The Corpus Christi-Nueces County Public Health District says the events are designed to give residents the tools they need to protect their homes and families while raising awareness about mosquito-borne illnesses and emergency preparedness.
Residents are encouraged to arrive early, as supplies are limited and will be distributed while they last.
