Lubbock City Council approves north Lubbock rezoning despite public opposition

  • July 29, 2026

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – The Lubbock City Council voted Tuesday to approve a zoning change in North Lubbock that would industrialize the area, following more than an hour of public comment in which a majority of citizens pleaded with council members to table the plan.

The land in question is northwest of the airport, west of I-27. The Lubbock Economic Development Alliance asked the council to rezone the area from single family to general industrial — similar to a rezoning that took place in the area in February. LEDA also asked the city to annex more land in the area.

Homeowners across the street expressed concern about how the change would impact them and the value and safety of their property. Other residents said they are not against economic development but said there is a better way.

One resident addressed the council directly during public comment.

“Those faces stood before you in February and they begged you not to rezone,” the resident said. “They laid their vulnerability down at this podium.”
