Romo was originally arrested for suspicion of operating a vehicle while intoxicated (OWI) in Milwaukee. The arrest report indicated Romo took a standard field sobriety test. The arresting officer wrote that Romo performed “poorly.” Romo was booked into Milwaukee County Jail and promptly released.
The Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office said the citation filed Monday was a traffic violation and not a criminal charge. No other charges were filed as of Tuesday morning, and no other details were immediately made available.
A court date for Romo is still scheduled for Sept. 21 in Milwaukee.
Romo, a Wisconsin native, was in town golfing in the Wisconsin Amateur Championship at the West Bend Country Club. Romo has made it an annual trip. He finished the tournament tied for 73rd, shooting 35 over par across the four-day tournament. Romo was arrested hours after the final round.
Romo was scheduled to play in the 56th M&P Group Texas State Open golf tournament at the Cascades Country Club in Tyler, but he withdrew after the arrest.
Romo has not publicly commented since the arrest.
Romo spent his entire 13-year career with the Cowboys. The former undrafted free agent out of Eastern Illinois finished his career as the franchise’s all-time leading passer. Current Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott surpassed him for the title last season.
Romo has been the lead color analyst on CBS Sports’ NFL broadcasts since 2017. In 2020, he signed a 10-year, $180 million extension with the network.
