Corpus Christi handed out 200 free box fans during its annual Beat the Heat event, helping residents stay safe as dangerous summer temperatures continue.
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — With dangerous summer temperatures continuing across South Texas, the City of Corpus Christi is helping residents stay cool through its annual Beat the Heat fan giveaway.
The Parks and Recreation Department hosted its 17th annual Beat the Heat event Saturday, distributing 200 free box fans to community members. The giveaway marked the second event of the summer, bringing the total number of fans distributed this year to 400.

The fan giveaway is made possible through a longtime partnership between the city and Reliant, which has supported the program for 17 years.
Residents who attended also received free snow cones and activity books, giving families an opportunity to cool off while learning about resources available throughout the summer.
Corpus Christi Parks and Recreation Director Robert Dodd said the event is one of the department’s favorite opportunities to give back to the community.
“We’re out here supporting our community,” Dodd said. “We know how hot it is. We understand that people use these fans, and it’s such a great day for our department to come over here and serve our community, give out some free fans, give some snow cones out, and I think our community really appreciates that.”
City officials said the program is designed to help residents who may not have access to adequate cooling during periods of extreme heat.
In addition to the fan giveaway, Corpus Christi continues operating four Beat the Heat cooling centers at senior centers throughout the city. The facilities provide residents with a safe, air-conditioned place to escape high temperatures during the day.
The city encourages anyone needing relief from the heat to take advantage of the cooling centers and stay hydrated as triple-digit heat indices continue across the Coastal Bend.
