A San Antonio native is representing the Alamo City while taking part in the world’s largest international maritime exercise.
Airman Frederick Ramirez, a Southside High School graduate, is serving aboard the USS Essex during Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) 2026, a massive training exercise in and around the Hawaiian Islands involving more than 25,000 personnel from 31 nations.
Ramirez, who joined the Navy a year ago, said he was inspired to serve by his uncle, a Korean War veteran, while also hoping to take advantage of the Navy’s education benefits.
As an aviation boatswain’s mate (handling), Ramirez helps prepare aircraft for movement, launch and recovery, supporting safe and efficient flight deck operations during the multinational exercise.
Growing up in a household with six siblings helped prepare him for Navy life, Ramirez said, teaching him the importance of teamwork, patience and looking out for others.
“Serving in the Navy has opened the door to countless opportunities for personal and professional growth,” Ramirez said.
Ramirez said he plans to pursue a college degree while serving and thanked his parents and siblings for their support throughout his journey.
