BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – A longtime Girl Scouts camp in Bryan is closing its doors.
Camp Howdy has served thousands of Girl Scouts and families and has been a staple in the community for over 70 years. The Girl Scouts of Central Texas said the decision comes after a June survey which asked members what they want most from the organization.

Chief Marketing and Communications Officer Kursten Mitchell said the survey results showed outdoor experiences were ranked among the top priorities.
“So what we learned from the survey of our members is that outdoor experiences really, really matter,” Mitchell explained. “There are lots of places that actually have more infrastructure and are better designed to do some of the activities that we want to do.”
Mitchell said it was a tough decision to move forward with the closure of Camp Howdy.
“Camp Howdy has obviously been in the Girl Scout family for a very long time, and it holds a lot of really important traditions and memories, but people have really started changing how they interact with Girl Scouts,” Mitchell remarked.
The organization still owns the Camp Howdy property and has plans to sell it. In the meantime, Girl Scout members can access the camp as usual through the end of the year.
Mitchell said the Girl Scouts of Central Texas are continuing to focus their efforts on the Camp Bluebonnet Shores property in Lake Belton.
