CANUTILLO, TEXAS (KFOX14/CBS4) — Students and teachers at Canutillo Independent School District’s Reyes Elementary School are set to see new classroom technology and campus upgrades highlighted this week as the district marks the completion of its first bond renovation project.
Canutillo ISD held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Wednesday at Reyes Elementary School. The event is the first of six ribbon cuttings planned this fall tied to the 2024 Canutillo Bond.
Speaking to KFOX14/CBS4 on Wednesday, Gustavo Reveles, a spokesperson for CISD, said the completion of the project comes after the district first broke ground on the campus upgrades last September.
“We invested millions of dollars in instructional technology that are gonna help students really tackle 21st-century learning and give teachers the tools they’ll need to really reach these students and help them meet their academic goals,” Reveles said.
As part of districtwide improvements, Reyes Elementary received upgrades to instructional technology, including improved internet connectivity and the installation of interactive whiteboards in every classroom and other instructional spaces. The district said teachers have also received training to integrate the technology into daily instruction.
“Teaching and learning in the 21st century requires modern instructional tools that help our students meet their academic goals in a manner that will prepare them for postsecondary life in the best way possible,” Superintendent Dr. Josue Borrego said. “These whiteboards, as well as the improved connectivity, provide our teachers with an immeasurable amount of resources that will help them meet the learning styles of their students and prepare them to move along the K-12 pipeline.”
The district said the approximately $1 million bond investment at Reyes also included new HVAC chillers for climate-controlled classrooms, camera systems for safety and security monitoring, and an updated telephone and connectivity system designed to strengthen campus safety by allowing teachers to remain connected to district communication systems during emergencies.
CISD said the bond improvements at Reyes were completed on schedule and below budget, resulting in about $40,000 in savings from the guaranteed maximum price approved by the Canutillo ISD Board of Trustees.
The renovation project is part of the 2024 Canutillo Bond, a $387 million bond previously approved by voters, which is aimed at helping the district’s infrastructure.
