While some of the best junior swimmers in the country are at the U.S. Nationals in Irvine this week, the USA Swimming Futures Championships are running concurrently and there were some big drops and fast swims on the first day of competition.

In Austin, college swimmers dominated the first few events, but the final girls’ event of the meet went to rising high school sophomore Addison Vitulli from Blue Tide Aquatics in Houston in a huge best time.

Vitulli came into the meet seeded with a short course yards time of 10:02.00 in the 1000 freestyle because her best time in the long course 800 was not under the qualifying standard of 9:13.79.

She came into the meet with a lifetime best of 9:25.78, which she swam at TAGS last summer. In the event on Wednesday, she blasted a monster 9:00.88 to finish almost a second ahead of 18-year-old Avery Dillon, who swam 9:01.66.

Dillon just wrapped up her freshman year at TCU and took about two seconds off her previous best of 9:03.72 from last July.

Another young distance star, 15-year-old Jack Reburn from South Lake Aquatic Club, won the boys’ 1500 freestyle in 15:46.05. He finished more than eight seconds ahead of 2nd place Tristan McCain from Hill Country Aquatics, who stopped the clock in 15:54.60.

He was seeded in 16:08.50 from last summer’s FLAGS meet, but his previous lifetime best was 15:59.75 from the Speedo Sectionals in Ocala last month. This marks a near 14 second drop in the event since the beginning of June.

McCain is committed to Columbia for the fall and added about seven seconds from his best of 15:47.66, which he set last July.

There was one other non-college event winner. Carly Afanasewicz, a 16-year-old from Phoenix Swim Club, won the girls’ 200 fly in 2:15.12. This was two seconds faster than Texas Ford’s Rivkah Meza, who swam 2:17.10 for 2nd place overall.

Afanasewicz dropped more than two seconds from her previous best time of 2:17.87 from July of 2024. She is committed to Georgia for the class of 2027. Meza’s previous best was 2:17.63 from May.

Other Event Winners

Girls 200 Free: Crystal Yuen (UN), 2:02.66 — Rising Brown junior Yuen added six tenths from the 2:02.03 mark she set in July. She finished just six hundredths ahead of Sofia Oliveira from Charles River, who set a personal best 2:02.72 to finish 2nd. Oliveira is committed to Duke for 2027.
Boys 200 Free: Cooper McDonald (DYNA), 1:50.39 — McDonald just finished his sophomore year at Indiana. He added about half-a-second from his lifetime best 1:49.71 from August.
Girls 100 Breast: Aliana Marakovic (NTRO), 1:10.93 — Harvard rising sophomore Marakovic took five tenths off her lifetime best in the 100 breast of 1:11.51, which she set in May. She finished just ahead of Dynamo Swim Club’s Evelyn Entrekin‘s 1:11.01. Entrekin just wrapped up her junior year at the University of Houston.
Boys 100 Breast: Kiefer Roemer (TFA), 1:00.99 — Roemer is a rising sophomore at Missouri State, and he dropped under 1:01 for the first time to win the 100 breaststroke. His previous best stood at 1:01.41 from June of 2026.
Boys 200 Fly: Yochanan Meza (TFA), 2:00.95 — Meza just wrapped up his freshman year at TCU and has been training with Texas Ford this summer. He added a bit in the event from his best of 1:59.69, which he swam last August.
Girls 200 Medley Relay: Bolles School Sharks, 1:57.23 — The team of Ella Gotham (31.50), Victoria Edgar (32.36), Maryn McDade (27.34), and Emmie Lewis (26.03) won the 200 medley relay by almost two seconds over Swim Atlanta’s 1:59.01.
Boys 200 Medley Relay: Bolles School Sharks, 1:42.35 — Bolles School took the top two spots in the boys’ 200 medley with their ‘A’ and ‘B’ relays. Their ‘A’ consisted of Carter Wright (26.21), Spencer Kinsey (28.45), George Dovellos (24.55), and Tommy Lussier (23.14).
Girls 200 Free Relay: Bolles Schook Sharks, 1:46.96 — Maryn McDade (25.92), Victoria Edgar (26.77), Ali Canada (26.99), and Emmie Lewis (26.28) finished three tenths ahead of Hill Country Aquatics.
Boys 200 Free Relay: Bolles School Sharks, 1:33.21 — BSS finished six tenths ahead of Texas Ford Aquatics’ 1:33.85 with their team of Tommy Lussier (23.35), Carter Wright (23.23), Alex Meyers-Labenz (23.18), and Ryan Sepulveda (23.45).
