OK, I’ll admit it… I almost feel guilty saying this in the middle of a South Texas summer. But compared to the past few years…
We’ve kind of gotten lucky!
Now, before you remind me about the steamy afternoons and the sky-high electric bills, hear me out. Think back over the past month. Yes, it’s been hot. It’s July in Texas – it’s supposed to be.
But has it been relentlessly, ridiculously everyday hot? Not really.
In fact, San Antonio didn’t officially record its first 100-degree day until July 22. That’s much later than we’ve seen in recent summers. We’ve also managed to sneak in several mornings that were actually nice by late-July standards, and scattered rounds of rain during the month have helped keep the worst of the heat from settling in for weeks at a time.
That’s not what we’ve come to expect from the seventh month. The last few summers have trained us to brace for weeks of endless triple-digit temperatures. This year has been different. Maybe not “cool.” But definitely more forgiving.
As we close out July, high pressure is beginning to build over Texas, and it’s starting to look a lot more like the summer pattern we know. Triple-digit afternoons are taking over, and August heat is waiting just around the corner.
Does that mean the easy ride is over? Maybe. Maybe not.
But if you’ve caught yourself saying, “You know… this summer really hasn’t been that bad.” You’re not imagining it. History may remember July 2026 as the month that gave South Texas a little break before summer finally hit the gas.

Sometimes we don’t realize we’ve been lucky until the weather changes. We may soon find ourselves looking back at July and thinking…
“You know what? That wasn’t such a bad month after all!”
