(KBTX) – LSU is the second conference opponent on Texas A&M’s 2026 schedule, and the Week 4 matchup carries added storylines heading into the fall.
Lane Kiffin, who left Ole Miss before the Rebels’ playoff run to join LSU, will face the Aggies for the first time as the Tigers’ head coach. Kiffin has had a public history with former Texas A&M coach Jimbo Fisher, but his tone has shifted when discussing current Aggies head coach Mike Elko.
“Mike has really good insight on rule changes, on thoughts, of all the different ways that college football is evolving,” Kiffin said. “And so I’ve been really impressed with him in the meetings that way. And then, obviously, his teams have played great, too. I think they play really tough. They play physical. I think he’s really attacking, and he’s done a phenomenal job.”
Tigers looking for revenge after 2024 loss
Kiffin was not on LSU’s sideline last season, but the players who were remember the result. Texas A&M picked up its first win in Baton Rouge in more than 30 years, defeating the Tigers 49-25. Aggie fans took over Tiger Stadium during the fourth quarter, turning Death Valley into what some called Kyle Field East.
LSU players are anticipating the rematch, once again in Baton Rouge this year.
“That game is always anticipated. It’s a rivalry game with Texas A&M. The stadium was packed,” said LSU tight end Trey’Dez Green. “I’m really excited for that game.”
Linebacker Whit Weeks, who was sidelined during last year’s matchup, said the experience of watching from the sideline made the defeat harder to process.
“I wish we were playing them in College Station because I love going to that stadium. That’s an unbelievable stadium as well,” Weeks said. “It was tough for me because when you’re not playing, you feel like you’re letting your brothers down. So it’s really hard for me when I’m sitting out games like that. So it is going to be exciting for me to get to play A&M this year.”
Aggies face back-to-back road games
Under the SEC’s new nine-game conference schedule, LSU is one of Texas A&M’s permanent opponents, with the two teams alternating home and away each year. But since the new schedule starts this year, the Aggies will face the Tigers on the road in consecutive seasons, traveling to Death Valley on Sept. 26.
