The tropical-themed event gave seniors a chance to dance, socialize, and enjoy an afternoon of music, food, and fellowship before summer comes to an end.
PORTLAND, Texas — The Portland Community Center brought a taste of the tropics to the Coastal Bend by hosting its first-ever luau for seniors, giving residents a chance to celebrate summer with music, dancing and fellowship.
The event featured live entertainment, Hawaiian-themed decorations, food and games, creating an opportunity for older adults to get out, meet friends and enjoy a break from their daily routines.

For many who attended, the event was about more than the tropical theme.
“I think the favorite part of any event is to get seniors out and to socialize,” said attendee Lupita Hurst. “You don’t want to stay home all the time, so socialization is a big thing for us.”
Hurst, who traveled from Corpus Christi with her husband, said she enjoys attending Portland’s senior events because they bring people together.
“We just appreciate Portland Community Center for having these events for seniors,” Hurst said. “It means a lot to us.”
For Rhonda and Sam Tyler, the luau marked their first community center event. “I think it’s really neat,” Rhonda Tyler said. “There’s not too many things for senior citizens to do nowadays, so this is kind of a neat thing to put on.”
Sam Tyler said he has noticed the city offering more events for residents as Portland continues to grow. “I think it’s great,” he said. “The city of Portland is really growing fast, and I think it’s great.”
Billy Myers also attended the luau for the first time, saying he came to socialize, dance and enjoy the festive atmosphere.
“We’ve got music to dance to, good food and a nice theme,” Myers said. “We’re having a good time.”
Organizers hope the luau becomes another tradition that keeps seniors active, connected and engaged with the community.
