Two community BBQ benefits this weekend will help the Cruz and Montes families with funeral expenses after a crash claimed five lives.
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Coastal Bend continues to show its support for the Cruz and Montes families following the devastating crash that claimed the lives of five relatives at the intersection of U.S. Highway 77 and State Highway 89.
This weekend, community members are hosting two fundraising events to help ease the financial burden of funeral and burial expenses.

The first benefit takes place Saturday beginning at noon at 225 Green Avenue in Taft. Organizers, including FullSend BBQ, will serve pulled pork sandwich plates for $13, with every dollar raised going directly to the affected families.
A second fundraiser is planned for Sunday at VFW Post 2397 on Ayers Street in Corpus Christi. Supporters can purchase a pulled pork and sausage sandwich meal, complete with chips and a drink, for $15.
Organizers say both events are focused on helping the families during an incredibly difficult time while giving the community an opportunity to show its support.
The deadly crash has touched communities throughout the Coastal Bend, prompting an outpouring of donations, prayers and volunteer efforts.
Local businesses, volunteers and pitmasters have stepped forward to donate food, supplies and their time to ensure the benefits are successful.
Anyone unable to attend is encouraged to reach out to organizers to learn about additional ways to support the Cruz and Montes families as they continue grieving the loss of their loved ones.
