Texas man arrested after buying $159K in cattle with bad checks, sheriff says

LEON COUNTY, Texas (KWTX) — A 25-year-old man faces a second-degree felony charge after allegedly purchasing dozens of head of cattle with bad checks.

Payton Dean Carroll, of Barry, Texas, was arrested by the Leon County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division on a charge of Theft of Property between $150,000 and $300,000.

Authorities began their investigation on July 17, 2026, after receiving a report that an individual had purchased 77 head of cattle from Buffalo Livestock Marketing, Inc. using non-sufficient funds (NSF) checks.

The total value of the bad checks used in the purchase came to $159,604.03, officials said.

Leon County Sheriff Kevin Ellis extended thanks to the Buffalo Police Department, the Texas & Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association, and the Navarro County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance throughout the multi-agency investigation.
