One of San Antonio’s most iconic nightlife destinations has gone dark, but only temporarily. The Bonham Exchange officially closed its doors Saturday as the historic LGBTQ+ nightclub begins a monthslong renovation centered around a new fire-suppression system.

The downtown club announced the closure took effect at 12:01 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, while crews install a new fire-suppression system throughout the building. In a statement shared on social media, owners described it as “not a goodbye, but a see you later,” assuring supporters the venue plans to reopen later this year.

“We want our friends, neighbors and longtime patrons to hear one thing clearly: the Bonham Exchange is here to stay,” the statement reads.

Owners said construction is expected to take about four to five months before the venue reopens at full capacity later this year.

The project includes the installation of a new fire-suppression system, along with a new sound system, new flooring in the ballroom and several other upgrades throughout the historic venue. The Bonham also said reservations for private events will open soon, followed by a grand reopening celebration once renovations are complete.

The temporary closure comes as the club works to comply with San Antonio’s fire safety requirements for large entertainment venues. As previously reported by MySA, the city’s 2018 ordinance requires bars, clubs and restaurants that serve alcohol and have occupancy limits above 300 people to install fire sprinkler systems.

Earlier this year, Bonham co-owner Joan Duckworth said the roughly $550,000 project threatened the future of the longtime venue, prompting fundraising efforts to help cover the cost. The Bonham also hosted a fundraiser in May after expressing concerns about the financial burden of the project.

In its statement, the Bonham thanked its supporters, employees, entertainers and everyone who has stood by the venue over the years, adding that it will share construction progress and reopening updates on social media.

“We cannot wait to welcome you back,” the statement concluded.
