Two Texas cities landed among the nation’s 10 safest, while another ranked among America’s least safe.
Houston ranked as the second least safe city in the nation, making it the lowest-ranked Texas city in the report.
SmartAsset rated Houston’s disaster risk as “very high.” The city also recorded a violent crime rate of 11.5 per 1,000 residents, a property crime rate of 42.9 per 1,000 and a traffic fatality rate of 11.6 per 100,000 residents.
“Texas is home to some of America’s safest and least safe cities,” the study reads. “The Lone Star State is the only one with cities among both the 10 safest…and the 10 least safe.”
While Houston ranked among the nation’s least safe cities, two Texas cities cracked the top 10 for safety.
Plano claimed the No. 2 spot, trailing only Virginia Beach, Va. Although SmartAsset rated its disaster risk as “relatively high,” the city recorded a violent crime rate of 1.5 per 1,000 residents, a property crime rate of 14.7 per 1,000 and a traffic fatality rate of 6.9 per 100,000 residents.
Laredo was also ranked among the nation’s safest big cities, claiming spot No. 6. The South Texas city had a “relatively moderate” disaster risk, a violent crime rate of 3.7 per 1,000 residents, a property crime rate of 14.6 per 1,000 and a traffic fatality rate of 9.1 per 100,000.
