The La Vernia Police Department initially told the Wilson County News following the crash that a 16-year-old girl was driving a 2015 Lexus RX3 northbound on U.S. Highway 87 at about 3:50 a.m. Sunday. Other reports from KSAT and KENS say that the Texas Department of Public Safety put the crash happening at about 4:20 a.m.
Reports say for reasons currently unknown, the SUV swerved off the road, rolled over and crashed into the brick “Welcome to La Vernia” sign where the highway meets Chihuahua Street in La Vernia. The vehicle eventually caught fire. Officials from La Vernia as well as Texas DPS responded to the scene. The 16-year-old girl was pronounced dead when officials arrived on-scene, according to reports. Officials added she was the only person in the vehicle at the scene of the crash. They have yet to identify the girl involved in the crash, and the crash remains under investigation.
The Wilson County News said La Vernia Police Chief Donal Keil spoke with La Vernia Independent School District officials and are arranging to provide resources and support for students, staff and others before the first day of school on Monday, August 3.
