“My point at the [Tuesday] press conference was if we get an opportunity to improve this thing, we’ll do it,” team owner Jerry Jones said before Saturday’s practice. “But I don’t, in any way [want to sound] negative for me saying that is these guys that we’ve got out here, think they’re going to be [good players] for us.”
Jones is confident in several players on the 91-man roster, but if adding a player could be the difference in helping the team make a deep playoff run, he’ll do it.
“I’ve got a lot of confidence in our athletic ability,” Jones said of his current team.
When it comes to what position the Cowboys might upgrade, there is always the need for another pass rusher and middle linebacker.
Club officials haven’t made any inquiries into free agent pass rushers Von Miller (DeSoto native) or last year’s team sack leader, Jadeveon Clowney (8 1/2 sacks). Miller is hopeful he can sign with the Cowboys. Clowney had a visit with the Cleveland Browns as training camps open but hasn’t signed.
The club expressed some interest in middle linebacker Jordyn Brooks during the offseason before he signed a three-year contract extension with the Miami Dolphins.
At this stage of the summer, if the Cowboys make any significant roster moves where using a draft pick is part of the equation, it won’t happen until the regular season.
“It’s constant communication either through text [or] I go sit in [co-owner] Stephen [Jones] and [vice president of player personnel] Will [McClay’s] office,” coach Brian Schottenheimer said of roster discussions. “We just talk, we grab each other. I was just talking about something walking out to practice. But it is daily in the way we’re going to do that, 24/365 and I think the communication has been awesome.”
