Each year, the City of Arlington contracts a third-party vendor to help collect pavement condition data on one-third of publicly-owned streets. This year’s pavement condition survey, which helps Public Works prioritize future street maintenance and street rebuilds, focuses on streets located north of Park Row Drive in Central and North Arlington.
To collect data, the vendor operates a fleet of vehicles equipped with an array of precision instrumentation and equipment to assist the City with the pavement condition survey. The data collection vehicles travel roads in the target area collecting information on the type, extent and severity of pavement surface distress (i.e. cracks and ruts) in addition to collecting information on the smoothness and ride comfort.
About the City of Arlington’s Annual Pavement Condition Survey
In all, Public Work is responsible for maintaining more than 3,000 lane miles of roadway across the 99-square-mile city. The Department uses a scoring system of Red, Yellow, or Green to determine what roads needs attention and what type of repair technique to use on each road to prevent deterioration and costly rebuilds. Nearly 80% of the City’s roadway network has an Overall Condition Index (OCI) rating of “yellow” or “green”.
Using technology to gather and record roadway data allows the City to develop a comprehensive and proactive approach to roadway management that ensures road maintenance budgets are spent wisely. Using this approach, the Public Works Department performed work on over 718 lane miles during Fiscal Year 2025. Of these, 3.71 lane miles were improved through the Capital Improvement Program and the remaining lane miles received maintenance work either by City staff or contractors.
