EL PASO, TEXAS — A strong gas odor was reported in parts of central El Paso Tuesday night. According to a social media post from City Representative Josh Acevedo it was traced to the Marathon Petroleum refinery.
Marathon Petroleum confirmed to Acevedo that trained professionals at its El Paso refinery identified the source and are working to address the situation.
“Air monitoring has been deployed in the community as a precaution and has not detected any readings that indicate health risks,” Marathon said in a statement to Acevedo.
City officials said the odor appeared to be dissipating as of early Wednesday morning.
KFOX14/CBS4 has reached out to Marathon Petroleum’s El Paso refinery for additional information and is awaiting further details, including what caused the odor and whether any operational issues were involved.
Several viewers contacted KFOX14 to report smelling the odor in the area.
