Banner was one of several rappers at the show honoring the 30th anniversary of UGK’s 1996 “Ridin’ Dirty,” an album that signaled a national breakthrough for the Port Arthur duo and Southern rap in general. In the days since the sold-out tribute, his joyous performance has been shared, recreated and made into memes across social media.
The performance connected instantly with fans at the show. Banner channeled Pimp C’s flamboyant persona in a teal, three-piece suit over a wide-collared shirt, with a flowing wig and umbrella, as he performed “Pinky Ring.” It was the perfect blend of camp and commemoration. Banner counted Pimp C as a friend and released a tribute song to him a few years ago.
When Banner launched into his own “Like a Pimp, he began skipping around the stage. It’s that moment that several people have responded to with their own captions and clips.
Hairstylist Andrea Mona Bowman said she was inspired by Terrence Howard’s “Cadillac Richie” character in “Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist,” a look she also created.
Banner himself has been enjoying the ride, sharing several of the videos on his own Instagram account.
