TEXAS — Triple-digit temperatures continue across North Texas, and while many people can head indoors to escape the heat, road crews don’t have that option.
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) says keeping workers safe during the summer comes down to preparation, teamwork and recognizing when it’s time to take a break.
“We know we live in Texas. We know it’s going to be hot,” Tila Grant with TxDOT said.
Whether they’re patching roads, working on highway projects or maintaining Texas roadways, TxDOT crews spend hours working outside in extreme heat. Officials say crews begin each day with a safety meeting focused on hydration, recognizing the signs of heat-related illness and watching out for one another.
TxDOT says crew chiefs regularly check on workers throughout the day, ensure water is readily available and adjust work schedules when possible to avoid the hottest part of the afternoon. Workers are also encouraged to take breaks as soon as they begin feeling the effects of the heat.
“We’re out 24/7, 365. You know, extremely warm temperatures, cool temperatures. We are outside, so they are already prepared for it,” Grant said.
To help stay cool, many crews wear lighter, more breathable clothing while working outdoors.
Officials say the same safety advice applies to anyone who spends extended periods outdoors. They recommend drinking plenty of water, taking breaks when needed, seeking shade or air conditioning whenever possible and paying close attention to the warning signs of heat exhaustion and dehydration.
“We want to look after each other, keep each other safe, and make sure that we’re able to go home to our actual families, you know, at the end of the day,” Grant said.
