COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) – Deputies said an electrical fire at the Sheriff’s Office damaged several vehicles in the evidence lot.
According to the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office (EPCSO), a deputy saw the fire at 4:30 a.m. on Oct. 4 in the evidence lot while arriving for duty at the El Paso County Jail. The lot is on the southern end of the jail campus.
The Colorado Springs Fire Department (CSFD) and Stratmoor Hills Fire Department (SHFD) responded, along with deputies from both the Detention and Law Enforcement Bureaus.
EPCSO said the fire was quickly contained and extinguished.
Neither the evidence facility nor the jail sustained structural damage; however, 13 vehicles in the evidence lot were damaged by the fire.
CSFD investigators determined the fire was electrical and originated in one of the vehicles in the lot.
The cause of the fire has been determined to be accidental, deputies said.
The damaged vehicles were being held as evidence in criminal cases at various stages.
The sheriff’s office said they notified the 4th Judicial District Attorney’s Office and began identifying the associated cases to ensure all relevant parties were informed.
Deputies said the investigation and notification process took several weeks to complete.
