SAN ANTONIO – One person was killed Thursday morning after an SUV crashed into the back of a parked 18-wheeler on Interstate 35, shutting down the southbound lanes near West Southcross Boulevard.
Police said the crash happened around 6:11 a.m. Officers said an 18-wheeler was parked on the right shoulder of southbound I-35 when a 2018 GMC Acadia veered onto the shoulder and slammed into the rear of the truck.
Police said the driver of the GMC was killed instantly. Authorities have not yet identified the victim and were unable to determine at the scene whether the driver was male or female due to the severity of the crash.
The driver of the 18-wheeler was not injured.
Investigators are still working to determine why the semi was stopped on the shoulder. Police said it was parked completely off the roadway, though relatively close to the travel lanes.
Authorities also said there were no signs the driver of the GMC applied the brakes before impact.
The southbound lanes of Interstate 35 at West Southcross Boulevard are expected to remain closed for several hours while investigators process the scene.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
