AMARILLO, Texas (KVII) — Repairs are underway after an unauthorized discharge of approximately 500,000 gallons of treated wastewater in Amarillo, according to city officials.
The spill occurred in a non-residential area about a quarter-mile south of the Harrington Power Generation facility and a half-mile west of Lakeside Drive.
City officials said the wastewater had completed the full treatment and disinfection process before the discharge and is not considered an environmental hazard. Officials also said no public or private drinking water sources have been identified within a half-mile of the spill site.
The discharge was discovered at 7:38 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 5. Officials said the release was caused by over-pressurization of a wastewater line.
The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality has been notified of the spill. Repair work is being carried out by the City of Amarillo’s Wastewater Collections personnel.
The city did not say when repairs are expected to be completed or whether any additional wastewater has been released since the initial discharge.
