A Dallas police officer fired their gun during a traffic stop Thursday involving an armed robbery suspect after a vehicle pursuit from Oak Cliff to North Dallas, police say. No one was injured.

Officers responded around 9:20 a.m. to a reported robbery in the 3500 block of Sunnyvale Street in Oak Cliff, where an armed suspect stole a vehicle, Dallas Police Executive Assistant Chief Terrence Rhodes said during a news conference.

Officers followed the suspected stolen vehicle north and the driver pulled over in the 5800 block of Williamstown Road in the Melshire Estates neighborhood.

As the driver got out of the vehicle, one officer fired their gun, Rhodes said. The suspect wasn’t hit and was taken into custody.

The investigation is ongoing, Rhodes said.

Police didn’t immediately identify the suspect or say what charges the person could face. Sean Pease, president of the Dallas Police Association, declined to comment after the news conference. 

Police cars lined Williamstown Road for several hours as investigators processed the scene. Yellow crime scene tape surrounded a property several houses from the intersection of Williamstown and Jamestown roads, where dozens of officers gathered.

Blake Frieden was working in his home office when he heard what sounded like a “pop.”

“There’s a lot of minor accidents at this intersection,” Frieden said. “In retrospect, what I heard was probably a gunshot, and that’s why there was so much traffic noise.”

A Dallas police crime scene investigation van arrived around noon. Shortly after 1:30 p.m., a tow truck removed what appeared to be the suspected stolen vehicle as officers took down the crime scene tape.

By 1:45 p.m., police had cleared the scene, leaving a handful of neighbors talking amongst themselves on the street.

This was one of two officer-involved shootings on Thursday in Dallas. An officer with the Dallas Independent School District was shot and wounded outside a northwest Dallas Sam’s Club during an unrelated shooting an hour and a half later  — less than three miles away.
