You can never have enough Frida Kahlo, especially when there’s a world record at stake.

The 10th annual Frida Fest will attempt a Guinness World Record for the largest gathering of people dressed as the iconic Mexican artist. The unibrows will unite noon to 5 p.m., Aug. 15 and 16 at Wonderland of the Americas mall. The event is free and open to the public.

“To be honest we probably would have been able to do it the first year we did Friday Fest,” said event organizer and curator Janie Villarreal McClinchie. “It’s fun. And it’s one of those things that the people who do attend the event (will) want to take part of that.”

Frida Fest has celebrated the art and spirit of the tortured painter since 2016. This year’s event will feature more than 60 area vendors and galleries, along with live performances, a curated art show and a community fashion show.

Of course, the real scene stealer will be the Frida Look-A-Like Contest.

The cosplay extravaganza will vie for a Guinness World Record for the most people properly dressed as Kahlo. That means full Frida gear from floral crown to colorful footwear. All ages and genders are welcome to participate.

The record attempt unfolds at 3 p.m. Saturday, while the contest runs 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Kahlo costumes aside, Frida Fest co-organizer Fred Garza-Guzman said the event continues to draw multiple generations of attendees fascinated by the late artist’s dynamic work and inner strength.

“Year after year, people have come to celebrate Frida for many different reasons,” Garza-Guzman, who also co-owns Curious Twin Tours, said via text. “Some are drawn to her artistic brilliance, others to her bold approach to life and her refusal to be defined by hardship. Many also connect with the fact that, for much of her life, Frida lived in the shadows. She didn’t have her first solo exhibition in Mexico until the year before she died, yet today she is one of the world’s most recognized artists.”

“For me, she’s my muse because I am a visual artist,” said Villarreal McClinchie, who also runs the San Antonio art studio and artisan space Que Retro Art.

That muse will be present in body as well as spirit at Frida Fest.

“Even if we weren’t doing the world record, people still attend dressed like (Kahlo),” Villarreal McClinchie said.
