If back-to-school shopping is still on your to-do list, this weekend could save you a little money at the register.

Texas’ annual tax-free weekend is underway, giving shoppers a chance to skip sales tax on many clothes, shoes, backpacks and school supplies.

The 2026 sales tax holiday runs today through midnight Sunday.

Most qualifying items must cost less than $100 each. That means your entire shopping trip doesn’t have to stay under $100. If you buy two qualifying shirts for $80 each, for example, both are tax-free even though your total bill is $160.

So, what can you buy tax-free?

But don’t assume everything on your back-to-school list gets a tax break.

Computers, software and textbooks are still taxable. So are jewelry, purses, wallets, watches, luggage and briefcases. Athletic equipment and clothing designed specifically for certain sports, such as football pads and golf cleats, also don’t qualify.

There are a few quirks shoppers should know about.

Backpacks qualify if they’re priced under $100, including backpacks with wheels and messenger bags. But gym bags, duffle bags, computer bags and luggage don’t make the cut.

Online shoppers aren’t left out either. Qualifying purchases can be made online, by phone or through the mail as long as the purchase is made during the tax-free weekend. It doesn’t matter if the package arrives after the holiday ends.

Watch those shipping charges, though. The state counts delivery, shipping and handling charges as part of an item’s sales price. So if you buy a $95 pair of jeans and pay $10 for shipping, the total becomes $105 — making the jeans taxable.

Layaway purchases can also qualify. Shoppers can either put an eligible item on layaway during the weekend or make the final payment on an eligible item already on layaway.

There’s no limit on the number of qualifying clothing or footwear items shoppers can purchase tax-free, as long as each eligible item is priced below $100.

The tax-free weekend comes just days before many San Antonio-area students head back to class, making it one of the busiest shopping weekends of the year for families trying to finish those school supply lists.
