SACRAMENTO, Calif. —

After voters overwhelmingly approved the measure to gerrymander California’s U.S. House Districts to send more Democrats to Congress, Gov. Gavin Newsom plans to rally in Texas and celebrate the Texas Democrats who resisted their state’s redistricting push.

President Donald Trump’s request to Texas to help him find five more Republicans for the U.S. House of Representatives ahead of the 2026 midterm elections prompted California Democrats to push Proposition 50, which they claim to be a response to election rigging.

While Texas lawmakers approved the redistricting of its congressional lines, California’s process required voters to approve the changes with a special election.

California’s new system temporality scraps maps drawn by the state’s voter-approved, citizen-led independent redistricting commission and swaps in new maps drawn by Democrats for the 2026, 2028, and 2030 elections.

Since voters passed Prop 50 by a wide margin, Newsom’s campaign confirmed the governor will head to Houston, Texas, to celebrate the Texas Democrats who stalled the vote to redraw the Lone Star State’s district lines.

Newsom and U.S. Rep. Nancy Pelosi in August, hosted those Democrats in California as a sign of solidarity during their walkout from the vote to redraw Texas’ districts.

Texas Democrats were also present when California’s Democratic leaders announced plans for new maps.

Following Prop 50’s passage, California’s GOP has sued to stop the new maps from taking effect, an effort Newsom’s office dismissed by saying, “Good luck, losers.” There is also now a ballot initiative to limit Prop 50’s scope of effect to only the 2026 election.

On Election Day, Trump and his administration accused California of election fraud, specifically citing mail-in ballots.

Prop 50’s approval means starting with the 2026 election, the maps drawn by California Democrats and their consultants will reflect changes intended to offset Texas’ gerrymandering by attempting to send five more Democrats to Congress.

Since the election, multiple people, including current congressional members and former officeholders, have announced plans to run for some of those newly redrawn districts meant to favor Democrats.

In a Prop 50 victory speech, Newsom called on other governors in Democratic states to follow his lead on redistricting.

Midterm elections are typically where the president’s political party may lose seats from dissatisfied voters, with the possibility of losing decisive majority power. Multiple other states are either considering or already pushing their own gerrymandering efforts.
