SAN ANTONIO – With thousands of students across Bexar County set to return to classrooms beginning next week, county officials are urging drivers to slow down and stay alert as traffic increases around schools and neighborhoods.
Bexar County said the start of the school year typically brings heavier traffic during morning and afternoon commutes, when children may be walking, riding bicycles and boarding school buses.
Officials said drivers should be mindful of added activity along their daily routes, noting that some students may not be aware of traffic dangers.
“Back-to-school season is an exciting time for families, but it also requires all of us to be more attentive behind the wheel,” said Dave Wegmann, interim director of Public Works and county engineer. “A few extra moments of patience can prevent a tragedy. We ask every driver to slow down, put away distractions, and watch carefully for children, crossing guards, and school buses.”
The county is reminding motorists to obey posted school zone speed limits, watch for children crossing streets near schools, neighborhoods and bus stops, and stop when required for school buses displaying flashing red lights and extended stop arms.
Drivers are also encouraged to avoid using cell phones or other distractions, allow extra travel time due to expected congestion during arrival and dismissal hours, and use extra caution before and after school when pedestrian activity is highest.
Parents are also being encouraged to talk with their children about pedestrian safety, including using designated crosswalks, staying aware of traffic while walking, and following instructions from crossing guards.
Bexar County said everyone—whether traveling by car, bus, bicycle or on foot—has a role in keeping students safe as the new school year begins.
