Storm chances fade as weekend heat builds

  • August 7, 2026

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Most of us will stay hot and dry Friday evening, but a few storms could sneak into our northern counties.

Most models are keeping the storms out of our area, so rain is far from guaranteed, and we expect most areas to remain dry.

However, if a storm does make it, the wind will be the biggest concern. Gusts could reach 70 mph, and strong outflows could race ahead of the storm. Meaning we might see more dust than rain.

By Saturday, the heat takes over again. High pressure will shut down rain chances and push afternoon temperatures into the upper 90s and 100s.

That pattern will stick around through at least the middle of next week. Better rain chances may return next week when the high pressure finally shifts east.

Bottom line, most of us will miss the rain and keep the heat. Just keep an eye on the northern sky Friday evening because even an isolated storm could pack a decent punch.
