Portion of White Rock Trail reopens early after major repair work

The City of Dallas announced its repair project on the trail has been completed months early, enhancing safety and accessibility for the community.

DALLAS — The City of Dallas has provided good news for those who like to explore White Rock Trail.

A release from the city Thursday announced that its infrastructure repair project on the trail has been completed two months ahead of schedule. Sections of the trail closed off due to the repair included Garland Road between East Lawther Drive and Winsted Drive and East Lawther between Garland and Winfrey.

Grouting was needed on an abandoned pipeline measuring 36 inches in diameter in that area. A large sinkhole developed over that pipeline and instantly caused concern to residents in the Lakewood area who use the trail. In the city’s announcement they detailed that the grouting in that area has been completed, furthering work that was immediately done to fill the sinkhole when it first emerged in March. 

The grouting work, which began in mid-June this year and was expected to last up to a date in September, has been included in time for these parts of the trail to once again be open to the community this Friday, August 7, a month ahead of schedule, the city says.

Overall, the city says its repair project was completed two months ahead of schedule. Credit was given to a collaborative effort involving Dallas Water Utilities, Transportation and Public Works and the Dallas Park Department.

“By working together, the city has made long-term improvements for trail users,” said John D. Jenkins, Director, Dallas Park and Recreation Department. “This project will reduce the chances of future sinkholes and protect the trail for everyone.” 

Jenkins also said the department looks forward to seeing the community back on the trail. 

“Working with other City of Dallas departments has ensured that the trail is ready and safe for walkers, cyclists, and anyone coming to enjoy the outdoors,” Jenkins said.
