SAN MARCOS, Texas (KXAN) – One of the largest student housing projects currently under construction in Texas has reached a milestone: Texas State University is celebrating the topping out of its new Juniper & Verbena residence halls today. Construction management company SpawGlass, Texas State officials and project partners gathered as the final structural steel beam was placed on the university’s largest student housing development, which will add 1,504 beds and a 563-seat dining facility.

According to a press release, the ceremony marks the transformation of the site where Smith Hall (1958) and Arnold Hall (1962) once stood on campus, and where the new $280 million investment is replacing the two former residence halls.

In a statement, the university said the project supports Texas State’s long-term goal of serving 50,000 students at its San Marcos campus by the year 2030. Last fall, 44,596 students were enrolled, a 9.6% increase from 2024, which set the previous record. Last year also marked the first time enrollment within the entire Texas State University System exceeded 100,000 students.

The 10-story residence towers still have a way to go, with construction set to be completed one year from now in August 2027. According to the press release, “modern student housing continues to play a critical role as universities across Texas address increasing enrollment and campus housing demands.”

“Reaching the topping out milestone reflects the exceptional teamwork and commitment of everyone involved in this project,” said David Paden, President of SpawGlass’ Austin Region. “Texas State University continues to experience tremendous growth, and Juniper & Verbena Halls will provide students with a modern residential community designed to support both their academic success and campus experience for decades to come.”

According to the press release, the project also includes infrastructure improvements that aim to strengthen pedestrian walkways between the residence halls, the Cibolo and Alamito residential communities, the LBJ Student Center, Alkek Library and surrounding buildings.
