EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — The United Way of El Paso County’s Center for Resiliency, in partnership with El Paso County, led the community’s annual Day of Remembrance on Aug. 2, marking the seventh anniversary of the Aug. 3, 2019 mass shooting that claimed 23 lives.

The ceremony was held at the Ascarate Park Healing Garden and honored the victims, supported survivors and families, and provided the community with an opportunity to reflect and heal.

“As we mark seven years since August 3, we continue to honor the victims, support their families, and stand with our community in recognizing the strength, compassion, and resilience that have carried El Paso forward,” said Georgina Hernández, president and CEO of United Way of El Paso County.

Since the 2019 tragedy, United Way’s Center for Resiliency has provided trauma-informed support to survivors, families and the broader community. The organization said the annual remembrance serves as a space for collective healing while recognizing the resilience that has defined El Paso in the years since the attack.

The day’s events began with a community sound bath at 10:30 a.m. at the Ascarate Park Pavilion. The evening ceremony started at 6:45 p.m. with instrumental music by El Paso Pro Musica, followed by a welcome and moment of silence led by El Paso County Judge Ricardo Samaniego. Family members will participate in a luminaria lighting ceremony before an invocation by Bishop Mark Seitz and a prayer led by Pastor Michael Grady.

At 8:10 p.m., members of the El Paso County Commissioners Court read the names of the 23 victims while ceremonial beams are illuminated. Judge Samaniego will deliver the closing remarks.

According to United Way, the Center for Resiliency was established to support individuals, families and communities affected by trauma. Through its resiliency navigation model, the center connects people across the Paso del Norte region with housing resources, behavioral health services and other support programs designed to promote long-term stability and well-being.
