“We are deeply moved by the outpouring of kindness, thoughts, and support flowing in for Officer Justin Jones,” the school district said in a Friday statement.

DALLAS — Dallas ISD Officer Justin Jones is out of surgery and doing well after being shot Thursday by a person he was trying to help, officials said.

Jones, 39, is expected to survive but will remain in the ICU as doctors monitor his condition. Sources tell WFAA that Jones is alert and talking

Dallas ISD said Friday that Jones remains in stable condition as he begins his recovery. The district also thanked the community for the outpouring of support for the officer and his family.

“Officer Jones’ actions reflect the true heart of our Dallas ISD police force and security officers,” Dallas ISD said in a statement. “Day in and day out, our officers answer the call with selflessness and courage to protect students, staff, and neighbors.”

The shooting happened around 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 6, at Sam’s Club in the 4100 block of I-635 near Midway Road. Sources tell WFAA that Jones was flagged down by a friend of the suspect saying the suspect needed help and might be suicidal. That’s when Jones put the suspect in his squad car and drove him to the Sam’s Club and Walmart parking lot. There was some sort of struggle, and the suspect shot Jones, sources say.

Jones was shot at least once and was taken to Parkland, where he underwent surgery. He has been with the Dallas ISD Police Department for 16 years, officials said.

“Please continue to keep Officer Jones, his family, and his fellow officers in your thoughts and hearts as he heals,” Dallas ISD said in a statement. “Their commitment to serving others is something we will never take for granted.”

Other officers responded to the scene shortly after the shooting and took life-saving measures, according to Dallas ISD police.

The status of the person who shot Jones was unclear. Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux initially said during a press conference that a suspect was in custody, but a Thursday afternoon statement from the Dallas Police Department said Jones was shot by an “unknown suspect.” Sources tell WFAA that there is someone under arrest and he has allegedly admitted to the shooting.

Walmart, which owns Sam’s Club, said it was working with law enforcement as the investigation continues.

“The safety of our associates and customers is a top priority,” the company said in a statement.

Dallas ISD is asking the community to continue keeping Jones, his family and his fellow officers in their thoughts as he recovers.

“We are deeply moved by the outpouring of kindness, thoughts, and support flowing in for Officer Justin Jones,” Dallas ISD said in a statement.
