SAN ANTONIO — The San Antonio Independent School District is looking for organizations and school leaders interested in creating new and innovative in-district charter schools for the 2027-28 school year.
SAISD issued its annual Call for Proposals on Monday. The district says the goal is to improve student outcomes, increase innovation, and give families the opportunity for high-quality school options.
The SAISD district is accepting proposals for two types of schools: turnaround models for low-performing elementary or middle schools, and innovative models that rethink traditional education.
Nonprofit 501(c)(3) educational organizations, higher education institutions, and SAISD school leaders can apply.
Turnaround proposals must show how a school could significantly improve academic achievement within two years.
The district says applicants should show evidence that their proposed model can improve student outcomes, respond to community needs and be sustained and expanded over time.
One campus has already been identified for an innovative partnership: Cooper Academy at Navarro, located at 623 South Pecos Street.
Applicants will have access to district data, campus improvement plans, and technical assistance. Approved proposals could also receive planning grants or startup funding.
Schools selected through the process would operate under a performance contract, giving them greater autonomy in exchange for accountability for results.
Letters of intent are due Aug. 21. SAISD will hold a virtual information session at noon Aug. 25, and full applications are due Sept. 11.
Applicants will be reviewed and potentially interviewed in October. Proposals that move forward are scheduled to go before the school board for approval in December.
