The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has issued a traffic alert for drivers traveling on Interstate 35 in downtown Austin. There will be alternating night closures on parts of I-35 that will impact nightly and early morning commuters on the highway for three days this week.
The Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK) bridge at I-35 and the northbound and southbound frontage roads will be closed starting Monday, August 10 until Thursday, August 13 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. In addition, the southbound I-35 exit 235A, upper deck ramp to 15th Street will be closed nightly from Tuesday, August 11 until Wednesday, August 12 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Last week, TxDOT closed eastbound and westbound State Highway 71/Ben White Boulevard to southbound I-35 flyovers to continue work on the Capital Express South expansion.
The South portion of the project is expected to be finished by late 2028, while the North expansion is slated to wrap up by early 2029, and the Central could be completed by 2032 or 2033, according to TxDOT estimates.
