A traffic stop in downtown Dallas in the early morning hours of August 10 led to the recovery of a stolen vehicle belonging to a Dallas College Police Department sergeant, along with a large amount of police-issued equipment, authorities said.
Central Business Division officers spotted a white Dodge Charger driving the wrong way on a one-way street with no headlights on at about 2:10 a.m., according to the Dallas Police Department. When officers approached, they observed the driver sweating heavily and unable to turn on the vehicle’s headlights.
Officers could see police uniforms, gear, emergency lights, and a dashcam inside the car in plain view. The driver, who was familiar to officers from previous encounters in the area, was not the registered owner of the Charger. He was taken into custody on multiple traffic violations.
An inventory search of the vehicle turned up a police badge, several police-issued shirts, roughly 500 rounds of duty ammunition, multiple bulletproof vests, and additional official equipment. All of the items carried the name of the registered owner.
The owner was identified as a sergeant with the Dallas College Police Department, who told investigators he had not realized the vehicle was missing, police said.
Video footage showed the driver had entered the vehicle about an hour before the traffic stop. He was subsequently arrested on a charge of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle in addition to the traffic violations. The recovered property was returned to the sergeant at the scene.
“These officers exemplify the vigilance and investigative tenacity that defines the Dallas Police Department,” said Assistant Chief Teena Schultz. “What began as a routine traffic stop became a prime example of how attention to detail can prevent further crime.”
The investigation remains open under case number 116802-2026.
