LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Lubbock Area United Way’s “Good Works Gathering” is looking to make an impact on the South Plains in a big way.
“Glenda Mathis of YWCA came up with the great idea of what if we got everybody together in one space and provided resources for the community, especially as school is getting back in,” United Way president Amanda McAfee said.
The event will put 22 agencies under one roof at the YWCA of Lubbock from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 22nd to let residents explore what programs lubbock has to offer.

That includes Big Brothers Big Sisters and Women’s Protective Services. McAfee says bringing this event here is giving residents an advantage they didn’t have previously.
“I think a lot of times when you’re trying to find resources in the community, you have to go to this organization on this side of town and they’ll say you should talk to this organization over here,” McAfee said. “This is an opportunity for people to get signed up for services and find out the support in one place, one location, on one day.”
With so many agencies involved in the event, McAfee says it can make a big impact for a growing city like Lubbock.
“This feels like what a community is supposed to be,” McAfee said. “This feels like connection, and so I think that’s got the directors excited and our employees excited to be able to do that and connect in that way.”
The free event will also provide fun for the whole family with games, food and hands-on activities, while showing how strong Lubbock truly is.
“There is something special about the way that we do neighborliness,” McAfee said, “and so that’s what this is about, and I’m excited to see it come together and I hope the community comes and joins us and has a great time.”
