SAN ANTONIO – A prominent San Antonio attorney was arrested on prostitution and human trafficking charges after Texas Department of Public Safety investigators raided his downtown law office Wednesday morning.
Neil Calfas, 56, is charged with solicitation of prostitution and human trafficking, according to an official with Texas DPS.
The arrest came after members of the DPS Criminal Investigations Division were seen at the Calfas Law Group office along Broadway near East Houston Street early Wednesday. Investigators were seen removing boxes, files, laptops and other evidence from the office and placing the items into a DPS patrol vehicle.
Calfas was taken into custody following the raid. According to the State Bar of Texas, he has been a licensed attorney since 1997.
Attorney Deborah Sandheinrich, who said she has known Calfas for 25 years, arrived at the scene and said she was shocked by the allegations.
“I’ve never heard any hint of any impropriety from him. He’s always just been a stand-up guy, hard worker, did really good work for his clients,” Sandheinrich said.
Another attorney with the firm told News 4 San Antonio by phone that he was surprised by the arrest and was not aware of Calfas being involved in any criminal activity.
DPS has not released additional details about the allegations against Calfas, what investigators were searching for at his law office or what evidence was seized.
