North Texas will swelter Thursday under another hot and windy day, with low humidity raising the threat of wildfires for the already parched region.
The National Weather Service said Wednesday that a red flag warning for extreme fire danger could be issued Thursday, but conditions are currently expected to stay below that criteria. A grassfire danger statement will be issued “at the very least,” according to the weather service.
The elevated threat of grass and wildfires in North Texas will particularly affect areas along Highway 281 and west of the Interstate 35 corridor. Wind gusts in Dallas-Fort Worth are expected to reach 28 mph, according to the weather service.
The weather service encourages North Texans to contact local law enforcement or the fire department if they see or smell a fire.

A heat advisory could also be possible Thursday, but as of Wednesday afternoon, no heat advisory has been issued for most of North Texas. Several of the state’s northwest counties bordering Oklahoma were under a heat advisory Wednesday afternoon.
Thursday’s high will be 102 degrees, with a low of 81. The Dallas-Fort Worth region is expected to see a heat index, or “feels like” temperature, of 107 degrees, according to the weather service.
Temperatures will peak around 4 p.m., with temperatures in the low 90s expected by 9 p.m.

The weather service said Wednesday afternoon that those working outdoors should be especially cautious, as heat-related illness like heat stroke can occur quickly.
“It’s still summer, it’s still hot outside,” the weather service said in its Wednesday afternoon forecast. “Please take precautions if you must be outdoors.”
