CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A historic mural at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church was vandalized earlier Wednesday.

The mural has deep roots in the community, with Our Lady of Guadalupe at its center, and has become a symbol of peace for parishioners.

Church leaders say the mural was painted by a former gang member who turned to Christ and created the artwork as an act of reverence.

While the vandalism has hurt the community, church leaders say they are choosing forgiveness.

“We have a lot of hope that the person who did this will repent and we will continue to pray for them,” said Father Carlos Delarosa.

A Robstown artist has already reached out to the church and is in the process of repainting the mural.
