Family-run North Texas furniture store to close after 103 years in business

Baker’s Main Street Furniture, which may be the second-oldest business in Garland, is making its last sales as it prepares to close.

GARLAND, Texas — Baker’s Main Street Furniture, one of the oldest businesses in Garland, is closing its doors soon, the company recently announced. 

The 103-year-old furniture business is currently liquidating its stock as it prepares to close, according to a Facebook post from the company. The store, which is located in Garland’s historic square, has been in business since 1923.

The store has been family-owned for three generations and was first opened by August Marvin Baker as a hardware store in Wylie, according to a press release from the business. He then moved the store to its current location in Garland, where he expanded his offerings to include furniture, the release states. 

The store currently stands as a three-story showroom. Its current owner, David, is preparing to retire, and the family made the difficult decision to close down the business, the release states. 

“It has been nothing short of a privilege and honor for the Baker family to be part of this community for more than 100 years and serve generations of families,” said David. “Thank you for the trust and loyalty that’s enabled our family and business to thrive.”

The store’s final sale is underway at 524 Main Street, and the historic building is for sale.  

Baker’s Main Street Furniture is not the first family-owned furniture store in North Texas to close. Weir’s Furniture announced in March it would close all its stores after 78 years in business, WFAA previously reported.
